MALAYSIANS, it appears, are big spenders. And tourists are not too far behind. They splurged close to RM60 billion last year on a variety of goods, sending retail sales nationwide up to the highest level in six years.

Among their favourite purchases were clothes, jewellery, gift sets, electronic goods, foodstuff and sports equipment.

The carrots are out, as Singapore and Thailand try to lure Malaysian shoppers away from our own great national sale.

Yes, the Great Singapore Sale (GSS) started last Friday and the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale (ATGS) is just around the corner. And as usual, both countries are offering great bargains and perks.

Despite the best efforts of the Tourism Ministry to brand the country a shopping paradise, more and more Malaysians are heading for Thailand and Singapore.
