MasterCard cardholders spent US$55.4mil (RM181.16mil) during the first weekend of the Malaysian Mega Sale Carnival (MMSC) which started on July 5, which was an increase of 24% from US$44.6mil in the corresponding period last year.

Malaysian MasterCard cardholders spent US$50.3mil in 785,670 transactions within the first weekend of the sale while tourists’ 33,770 transactions totalled US$5.1mil.

A MasterCard report showed the highest spending volume was on July 5, the first day of the sale where US$20.7mil was spent compared with US$16mil on the first day of sale last year. The bulk of the total spending was in the retail sector where US$11.6mil was spent in duty-free outlets, department stores, clothing and general merchandise, followed by petrol at US$7.7mil and dining US$2.8 mil.

MasterCard worldwide vice president and senior country manager Jim Cheah said shopping was the second highest contributor to Malaysia’s tourism receipts.

“Retail programmes such as the MMSC continue to play an important role in further enhancing the development and growth of both Malaysia’s tourist and retail sectors,” he said.
