grocery-wars-tesco-vs-carrefour

Looks like the war of the Hypermarkets have begun . . .

… with Carrefour starting the first attack yesterday

. . . and now with Tesco Striking Back at Carrefour !!

. . . Giant seems to be quiet and on its own …. : )

What happened Yesterday?

Yesterday Carrefour took up the FRONT Page of the SUN and offered a 48Cents Cheaper for a carton of  Carlsberg & Tiger Beer!!!  We blogged about it and saw many responses to what people thought about the “48 cents” cheaper Beer, and if they (the consumers) would go to Carrefour rather than Tesco to save 48Cents.

In today’s STAR newspaper, Tesco Striked Back!

They calimed that a FACT!!! The Fact was that Tesco’s Price was not beaten!

They showed a Proof of Carrefour Receipt (refer to below image) to indicate that the Carlsberg should be RM89.40 rather than RM93.88!!!

Woo Hoo!! Tesco called Carrefour’s Bluff!! And it shows that Tesco Won!!!

So what gives? Is Tesco or Carrefour telling the Truth?  Where are you shopping today … Tesco or Carrefour?

  3. Liyana Mokhtar says:

    Good for TESCO… :D

  4. luisa says:

I choose neither because I don’t drink, hahah.

But I’ll definitely go to carrefour which is 25 minuts from my house rather than giant, tesco or jusco which are only 5 to 10 minuts away or my kids’ milk and diaper and also clothes.
They are waaayyy cheaper at carrefour, and I got the receipt to prove em

  5. wong says:

These 2 hypermarkets can say is one of the biggest in Malaysia liaw… Always beat each other like that. I still wonder if this is actually allowed or not? This also depend on the location. I don’t think both are built near to each other lo…

  6. damien says:

    french meets british?

    hmm…

  7. hyperX says:

Usually this kind of situation is win win situation between the dealer and the consumer. We got the cheap goods and they got their sales.

  8. Jenny How says:

i still prefer tesco btw. tesco the way to go!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Alicia Kok says:

SnS you’re the best for picking this up!

  10. Cy says:

well, i got suckered by Tesco. went d other day to buy and the next day… price went down by 5 bucks… and another day, additional 4 bucks for another item.

things were still properly packaged but they wouldnt let me return it.

  11. octopus says:

the local store inside my taman, RM87.88. haha!!!

  12. shazza says:

Way to go Octopus!Where’s your store? I don’t drink but asking for the benefit of others hahaha

  13. merry says:

I’ve won a fifth prize in “Menangi Pakej Percutian Hebat Di Carrefour” held by Carrefour in Sept to Oct 2008 valued at RM1,000.00, but found out that the package only worth about RM460.00.

Carrefour should checked with the sponsor Holiday Villa Hotels before advertised it valued at RM1,000.00 but only true value is RM500.00.

This is in fact a promotion hoax.

  14. ailina Fuad says:

i just went to carrefour today to shop for some groceries. Was so shocked to find out the price for beef. RM34 per kilo for ‘batang pinang’ parts? i thought the government are encouraging the hypermarkets to bring down the price.

to be honest, i still love to shop in MYDIN MALL. Couldn’t say it’s the best but some of the products are much much cheaper compared to Tesco or Carrefour or Giant.

but hafta admit the fish are not fresh at Mydin (so head on to Tesco to buy the fish… hahaha)

so it’s up to you to know how to shop and save!!!

  15. interate says:

mydin hypermarket is the cheapest among them all

  16. delima says:

eventho they said “SALE” or “price down”.. but for me, still the stuffs that i need never get cheaper like before the petrol price crisis…
e.g: baby diaper… why they don’t reduce the price? but it keep on increasing day by day….
if teco/ carrefour/ giant is really wants to reduce price… they should analyse which stuffs that people always buy.. not only for groceries… but other than that….
    please la…. huh!

  17. comp_geek says:

I don’t care…all I care is that at Tesco A&W rootbeer 24 cans selling at RM22+ and at Giant was RM33…waaliao!!

  18. mamafaris says:

ya larr.. the baby diapers, kadang2 naik kadang2 turun.. tapi selalu naik, turun pun sikit je.. or tak turun2.. hurmm.. anyway, i think jusco sells huggies ultra much cheaper than tesco.. i think la.. hehehe..

  19. frank says:

Ever wonder why our living standard is off balance? Why we are asking for lower price & not trying to make more money. Why in malaysia our lunch is 0.4% cost of a clerk salary but in other countries it is only 0.2%? Is our oruduct price is too low or or salary is too high?

  20. Sofia says:

One thing i love abt carrefour is that they let u return items for cash. I think thats reason enough to buy there. I have returned a broken mixer for gods sake n simply said it broke. Got my money back.

  21. Iskandar says:

The return policy at Carrefour is much better than Tesco. I’ve returned misc. bulky items as I’ve found out that their competitor offers much cheaper, Item was returned just like that, no questions asked. Even though I do fancy Carrefour’s return policy, Tesco is still the way to go.

  22. Aira says:

I don’t really like their tactic by showing comparison on the paper, in my opinion looks “cheap tactic”, however since the price knock down benefits the consumer, no harm at all.
About their (Hypermarket) tactics by showing that their price is lowest, but only for that particular item and at that particular date. So for those wise consumer out there, definitely they will buy from the best offer they can get and the most important thing is shopping at ease & convenience..
From my latest visits to this Hypermarket, generally almost all the groceries prices increase except those categorised as “Barang Kawalan” & on offer item. Since i hv kids, I noticed that most of the pampers price increase..:-(
will hv to think of alternative, perhaps “train potty” to minimize cost especially during economy crisis…

  23. azaa says:

    i choose giant ;)

  24. iraa79 says:

yeah.. diaper price increased quite significantly. I’m turning back to my cloth diapers… tot of letting it go but since now all prices is not pleasing, need to reduce laziness. actually modern cloth diaper lasts equivalent to drypers / mamypoko standard. it’s just quite expensive for a start but it lasts very long. mine is being recycled for my 3rd baby.. 1st one oredi 5yrs now but all the cloth diapers is still good. luckily didn’t sell it off last week!

  25. James G says:

for baby and toddlers milk best to get it from local chinese medicine shop…
some are at least rm 4 cheaper…

Powder milk some times cheap at tesco ,
As for me i visit both tesco and carrefour to get the best deal

  26. mas says:

i prefer mydin mall.. its cheaper than all. and so many choice… :)

  27. aesha says:

i agree with James dats some local chinese medicine shop…are way much cheaper in selected items like milk & diaper.
in my housing area, there only giant vs tesco…giant tmn conought and tesco taman midah
giant – cheaper price but traffic area and parking need to pay some more.
tesco – cheaper for selected items, hassle free and parking free.

consumer wise, use your buying power wisely.

ps: prefer mydin..since they provide “harga borong” but so far none located nearby my housing area.

  28. cassy says:

Tried the carrefour in tropikana mall and found the tenggiri cuts at RM36. gila betul. nothing like tesco. have been goin there since it opened in Mutiara damansara and will continue to go there. carrefour is quite empty. Speaks for itsself.

  29. minty says:

Tesco is cheaper when it comes to items you know will sell by truckloads, i also like that their in house items are better in quality. carrefour detergent powder for example made my clothes smell like they’re washed with chalk.

But I do love Carrefour Orange Juice which is SOOO cheap compared to the brands they sell, even when I found out later that their juice is more like orange juice flavored :) ).

Malaysia food items are still cheap than most countries. Try buying fresh fish/meat/fruits/canned items overseas and I’ll tell you, I’m so happy whenever I see fruits prices in KL.

But we do have expensive rice price than the rest of S.E.A but im not the one complaining when there are rice stocks in KL, and that I can afford them here, unlike Indonesia where eventhough the rice is cheaper, the lower income almost always buy the Grade C rice.

    I love Malaysia :P .

  30. shazza says:

Noticed Tesco has more customers and more cashiers than Carrefour and Giant. Used to be quite loyal to Giant until noticing their prices are usually higher than Tesco.I wish there was a Mydin nearby to comment. But many including yours truly have experienced wrong pricing. Price displayed differs from barcode price. So must keep looking at the scanned price when checking out items. Problems like this in Tesco especially seems to have lessened compared to a few years ago.

Stretch our ringgit by purchasing items in season eg fruits, veggies, seafood. So eat more durians when they are in season and discipline ourselves when they are not. Get fats from other items! LOL. Luckily many foodstuff like local fruits are available all year round!
