BPA-Free bottles?

Posted by mom2one on Apr 23, 2008

Was forwarded by friends on reports regarding BPA (Bisphenol A), a chemical that makes hard plastic, which makes about 95% of baby bottles in the market.

Including famous brands like Avent! (except for their VIA cups) Since no recall has been made and Avent website says that whilst their bottles contain BPA, but they think that it’s still safe for consumption (http://www.avent.com/uk/en/learn_more_faq_bottle_feeding.php#q20).

A visit to Jusco store and you will also see that some bottles have a special ‘BPA-free’ tag, Nuby brand if not mistaken.

I’m rather concerned, since this BPA seems to cause quite some serious problems later on in life (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A). I’m currently using the Avent range of bottles. Doing away with those bottles means lots of $$ leh!

Anyone has better idea if we should change out bottles or it’s just an over-reported incident?

But those lembik bottles… can be sterilised? Sigh… hard bottles Ok for sterlisation, but contains BPA; soft bottle BPA-free, but can’t be cooked. Guess we just have to choose between the lesser of two evils. Saw that this ‘BornFree’ brand seems to be the ‘IN’ brand now with this BPA issue. However, they seems to be selling only in US, Canada & Australia. They have glass bottles… wonder how babies are going to handle glass? Isn’t that dangerous too?

Hi! I ve search n check abt the BPA free feeding bottle. I find out that MAM’s bottle is BPA free n material use is lembik-lembik as u all mention. Prices are just like AVENT. Also anti colic and the bottom of the bottle can unscrew to make clening process easily.

April 28th, 2008 | 11:29 am
mom2one:

Nuby brand also has a line of products that is BPA free. It’s called the polypropylene line. The feel of the bottle is not as lembik, but it’s not the clear hard plastic like AVENT’s. Jusco carries that, and the last I checked, prices are cheaper than AVENT’s. About RM18-19 per bottle. Bought a couple, and my baby seems to like it. The teat is also anti-colic, with variable flow, and they have this teething buds on the teat to sooth teething gums. The instructions say it’s ok to boil, so I supposed sterilization is OK?

Alternatively, AVENT’s VIA line is also made from polypropylene plastic (BPA free), but these VIA cups are considered disposables, instructions recommend that you use up to 4 times only. If adhering strictly to this recommended guideline, think it’s going to be rather expensive feeding baby :)

April 28th, 2008 | 12:16 pm

Hi! I’m a mom of a 5 months old baby boy(1st baby). I’ve heard about the feeding bottles and BPA stuff. I still have quite a number of new Avent bottles and also the teats. If I like it’s kinda wasted if I change all the feeding bottles and also don’t know what do to with the unused Avent bottles. On the other, I’m quite concern of my baby’s health! Should I change it immediately? Sigh, in dilemma!

By the way, does anyone know where to purchase the MAM brand bottle in the mall other than online shop?

hi,

i think u can get mam bottle from metrojaya. my son also using avent. i buy the avent bottles from singapore during sale. it was cheaper than malaysia. i think should change bottle more frequent. i’m still thinking whether to change to other brand.

May 1st, 2008 | 11:14 am

Hi moms!

I went to Metrojaya and purchased the MAM bottles promotional pack (5oz & 9oz) for RM58 yesterday. No discount for other MAM’s items! However, i let my baby tried it out but he didn’t like the teat at all! Sigh… geramnya! Maybe he’s used or trained to suck Avent brand teats. Nevertheless, I tried inserting Avent teat… voila! It fits! Hehe… will let him try tomorrow…

MAM bottles featured at Babyland (SS2) Sale. Sorry didn’t take note of the price. But yes, its the only one labeled BPA-Free. Also sold at Babyjaya (babyjaya.com) in Uptown, Dsara Utama.

Amanda:

Boiling bottles in water will cause BPA leaches faster than steam sterilization. So sterile bottles using steam or tablets and dispose after 6 months.

May 6th, 2008 | 9:31 am

Any idea which brands are BPA free and where to get it besides MAM? I saw one website selling Nuby and I asked to confirm is it made of Polypropylene plastic. They said made of polycarbonate. Here’s the link: http://www.momschoice.com.my/proddetail.php?prod=NUBY1569&cat=23

I have to shopping this week to check out the BPA bottles l…I think it’s high time I changed my son’s bottles……never though of changing it cos it still looks new….I guess we have to….which is better Nuby or MAM? Any mums have insights??

May 8th, 2008 | 7:36 pm
mom2one:

Dear Wonderful Life:

The link to the Nuby bottle is not the range that is BPA free.. the BPA free Nuby bottles are not made from clear plastic, and it’s with colour (they call it the polypropylene line).. let me find a picture for you… here’s it: http://www.nuby.platformtwo.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=18&Itemid=34&lang=en

Gotten 3 Nuby bottles for my son, and he seems to like the teat, maybe because it has those teething buds that soothe his itchy gum. However, Avent’s teats cannot fit into the wide-necked Nuby bottle. Avent’s soft-spout is ok though…

May 8th, 2008 | 7:58 pm
mom2one:

Oh ya, did hear from a family friend that instead of changing bottles, you can also rinse the normal bottles with cool drinking water before feeding your baby. Perhaps that can be an intermediate solution to this BPA issue until we settle with some concrete solution. Also, rinsing bottle with cool drinking water is not that difficult afterall :)

hi, i ve bought Mam feeding bottle for my son and he is ok with it. The material is good but leceh skit because of the unscrew bottom hehehe. Everytime i clean the bottle, need to unscrew the bottom. But it is good actually because we can clean it thoroughly. I think Nuby bottle is also good. I think next time i want to try Nuby brand because it is cheaper than MAM and Avent.

May 9th, 2008 | 9:09 am
mama:

hi mums! just bought wide neck nuby bpa free bottles for my daughter today. Knock on wood, but she seems to be ok with it. Feel that Nuby is better than Mam as it is not so leceh with the openings and the teat that comes with it is variable flow hence no need to replace with a faster flow teat. Price is more reasonable compared to Mam and replacement teats are easy to find. But the teat could be a problem for younger babies as they might have a harder time sucking (since it is non drip). But for older babies it should be fine. Only grouse is I have difficulties in seeing the measurement line!

yk:

hi there, all these time i’ve been using avent bottles but after all the hoo-haa of the bpa matter, i’ve decided to change to pigeon glass bottles. i find that it’s much easier to clean but the disadvantage (other than it’s breakable) is the opening of the bottle is kind of small. i’m already so used to the wide neck bottle of avent so i always spill the milk powder at the side. and the flow of pigeon teats is quite small too so i’ve got to cut a little for the y size. but overall i’m fairly satisfied with it.

Hi. I know for a fact that although AVENT did not recall their current feeding bottles, they have produced BPA free products that are available overseas, US and Canada. So far, I have not seen it in Malaysia. Hopefully, we will be able to get it here soon or else, Singapore would be next best bet. You can check out AVENT new BPA free range on Babies R’Us website. Hope it is helpful.

Nemo:

To all concern mummies….

I understand your concern regarding this BPA thingy… I am in this polymer industries… Just to share information, controversy over BPA is basically about the effect shown on animal test (mice). They inject BPA directly to mice. YES, the effect is severe. BUT the dosage they use is high.BPA is non cummulative substance. It can be discharge. Only thing is, if the amount is very high, time taken to discharge also longer.
As for consumer product, all PC (polycarbonate) product contain BPA. Spend some time and check plastic product which have letter PC or 07 on the back side of it, it contain BPA. We use it everyday. But the thing is, the quantity used for the manufacturing process, is far lower than the one use for the poor mice. PC usually used for higher end product because of the durability. It mimic the properties of glass but lighter and stronger. Thats why it can take hot water without any shape deform. Leaching level of BPA into the water inside is so low, and not even one cancer cases in the world confirm cause by BPA intake.
Canada is the biggest promoter on banning BPA. Funny thing is, they keep quiet about the coating inside formula milk can. It also contain BPA. From my opinion, this BPA scare is just part of commercial scare by Canada. BPA is not in human carcinogen agent list. My advise is, it is safe to use BPA contain bottles. Just beware any deformation, because when there is deformation or discolouration, it means that the chemical bond already break. Then you should throw this container away. This guide not only for BPA contain bottle, but for alll plastics food container.

Yup .. I agree with mummyof2.. Will be switching to glass bottle. I know pigeon & chicco carries these bottles. joey:

the GREEN TO GROW bottles i ordered have just arrived from the states, luckily i found NUBY vari-flow teats fit these, (NUK teats too btw),
and these bottles are made of PES plastic, BPA-FREE, thank goodness!

Today, went to an exhibition, also found another brand carrying PES bottles (YAY!), at a reasonable-enough price tag, PUKU PETIT, RM32.90, 20% discount during exhibition, the teat that’s included also is good and has inbuilt valve for antic-colic feature just like CHICCO’s and NUBY’s (abovementioned).

So, now at least we have more options for BPA-Free bottles other than resorting to Glass ones, or those with complicated venting system, or 5-6 parts to be washed and assembled :D

I am just so happy to find more safe n healthy ‘options’ out there locally……..PHEW!!!

Yes, Nemo. My friend read in the newspapers(i think Chinese) n after dat, never let her son wear disposable diapers.

He wears napkin all day long at home, but she is a housewife with a maid.

I don believe it cos i m thinking the risk must be extremely low n sometimes ppl play it big from one narrow single perspective.

Hi,

I have been following all the comments above, my kid is using BPA bottles since age 1. Recently I read about the harmful effects of BPA and the same day i threw away all her existing plastics bottles. I started her with a cup and spoon..but she was not taking enough quantity. Then my mom suggesting using the existing clean juice glass bottles. I used one of her Heinz apple juice bottles using the cap and teat of her plastic bottles and Yo it works. I just have a question which brand of teats are the best? I am going to order for the puku petit bottles from a shop in penang since they are not available in KL and Klang.

Avent has carved a reputation for itself but I think there is no need to buy the brand.

At the price Avent is selling their items, may as well get bottles without BPA.

I do have the impression that brands that are BPA-less tend to be good (or so called branded anyway).

You can buy 2 bottles (4-5oz) of BPA free at no more than RM50 for both.

My eldest have been using the Avent bottles for 4+yrs. Selagi the bottles does not show signs of wear selagi tu I still use it.Never really take note on how long the bottles have been in use. Now that I am pregnant with my second child I’m back in the loop and hearing of these commotions on the BPA bottles issues. Bikin stress ok. Been browsing around, and saw there r quite a number of BPA free bottles now ie MAM, Dr. Brown, Evenflo (they hv glass botts too), B-Free etc. (Tak jumpa Avent BPA free) However, alhough it is BPA free you still need to throw them out after 6mths of usage. I guessed it is safe to use the BPA milk bottles under normal conditions of usage, just that we have to make sure that we follow the right and proper way? Making sure that there are no scratches etc, no damages prior to each use and to discard the bottles no more than 6mths. Nevertheless, there are no plastic milk bottles microwave safe!! But there’s a lot of transparency on the issue. Dont forget that there are training cups and sterilisers etc which are also plastics. Someone help to clarify this please.

Hi All Concern Mommies,

I’m a new mom and my baby girl now almost 4 months. All these while I’ve been using Avent feeding bottle and it’s sterilizer, and I got 2 extra new 260ml Avent bottle which comes with the Avent Steriliser from my friends….before I give birth to my baby girl, I’ve been hearing and been made known about the BPA free bottles and of course, I’ve been shopping to find for reliable feeding bottle. My sister in law been using Dr. Brown’s feeding bottle and she gave me one 4oz bottle and I’ve used it after my baby is born and I find it a bit hassle to wash and assemble so many parts therefore I go for Avent which I thought it would be the best brand but after reading all these about BPA thingy even on some Avent and Dr. Brown’s bottle, my worried arise….

I checked on the http://www.thelilcaliph.com and yes, I found Avent BPA free 5oz bottle – pack of 2 at RM85.90. I’m wondered, even if I have changed my existing Avent to the Avent BPA free, does that means that I can use the BPA free bottle for more than 6 months or longer or until my baby takes more feed? Or is there any shelf-life for all BPA free bottles?

And I’ve read in all the comments and advise in the columns here, advisable to change bottle every 6 months and teats every 2-3 months and from Nemo, she assured that there is no problem in using BPA contained bottle….I’ve been shopping and looking for BPA free bottle as well glass bottle…so hesitant to buy it cos there is number printed at the bottom even on glass bottle and when I check with the promoter, she also unsure what does the number represent for?

Really in dilemma….guess I shall heed for the advices like change bottle every 6 months, teats every 2-3 months and rinse bottle with cool drinking water before making milk.

Cheers to all mommies.

Hi Kyky,
Happy New Year! I can imagine how you feel because I too stocked up on Avent bottles recently – haven been using them for almost 3 years now.

I asked AVENT about using my current bottles and received an answer. Feel free to check it out at: http://apregnantpause.net/2008/12/26/another-email-from-avent/

After hearing that it’s OK to continue sterilizing the bottles with hot water, I’m going to continue with the AVENT bottles that I have because they work really well for my baby (now toddler!) and me.

Not sure where you got the tip to “rinse bottle with cool water before making milk” but the BPA problem is due to the chemical reaction from the plastic with hot, boiling water.

Our basic Science class teaches us that if you pour COOL water into a plastic bottle after it’s been in HOT water/steam, the plastic will either crack or disintegrate in some way. A chemical reaction!

Just remember not to use the hot, boiling water used to sterilize the bottle to make the milk, ok? I’m sure we’ll be fine if we do this. Hope this helps.

Hi all,

So, I have decided to choose glass bottle for my soon to be born baby :) Mom said when she had me, the hospital was using glass bottle and it was recommended by the doctor. Well, I have been googling for glass bottle and found fancy Weego bottle n Silikids glass bottle. These two are fixed with silicone skin cover which is so fancy. In bottle is AU$21-25 and the skin is AU$14-16. U may buy 1 small n 1 big and change them into various colors!! That is so cool.

There is one too that is being sold in Msia via online, NuturePure. It is sold about MYR62 per bottle. U may refer here:

http://www.momslittleones.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_30&products_id=433&osCsid=4rc23ndatf02lvurr22205eke2

Aussie is going to hold a big sale in June so any of u who likes to buy baby things online, it’ll be a great time too!!

But about the teats, im no so sure which and which should i get yet. Hubby is doing the research on that one. hope he gets it before baby comes in June :)

And thanks again for the great opinions, peeps :)

I have wrote a letter to Avent in Uk where the letter transfer back to philips malaysia the finally it have went back to the main distributor Kinderijk in kuala lumpur, however the feedback mention where they did not get any instruction from principle in singapore to recall and return all Avent bottle! Is this still consider social responsible? Since there is a huge issue and recall in US! Anybody has any ideas or anybody has succesfully return Avent product(bottles) to them in malaysia. Please kindly advise.

I would go for the BPA free bottles. I am working in a pharmaceutical line. In my field we buy glass cylinders, beakers and such because glass is an inert material. We don’t use plastic because it leaches some harmful chemicals.
Canada and certain parts of US has banned PC bottles. PC contains BPA. I have just recently come across this as I was looking to buy baby bottles for my 1st baby. Just in case this is a marketiing tactic by certain manufacturing companies, I suggest that one should check out reliable websites e.g. Ministry of Health/ FDA approved website(???) maybe? for confirmation.

Even if you get a BPA free bottles, please make sure u do not scratch the inside of the bottle when washing.

Hi, just to let you guys know there are fake BPA free bottles in the market. Just to be sure always ask for test reports that really certified and endorsed the bottles and don’t simply believed what is written or claimed on the packaging.

May 1st, 2009 | 10:24 pm

even Avent bottle got BPA! fake BPA free bottles? sounds terrible!! after much thought, I decided and just bought PES bottle 3in1 set @babyland yesterday. quality very good and very worth the value & most importantly, I feel secured.

Hi,there r lot of brands for BPA in 3 types glass,PP and PES,actually avent is not that good for reduce colic as i have just change from avent to tommee tippee to BFree Plus.Bfree plus is the best as it has an indicator to let you know the milk is hot,2ndly the teats wont collapsed and is very proven to reduce colic with the anti bubble tube and is made of PES which can used longer than PP bottle as it wont easily get blur.Puku is not that good as is from taiwan and not really can reduce colic.Used many brands since my first baby.Bfree is popular in kl but can get in penang at peekaboo baby shop at jalan burma next to CTY Aquarium,Their price is cheap and have many good brands similar to mothercare and disc is very good

How was the pigeon glass bottle or pigeon BPA bottle(plastic)? Anybody have tried, any concern?

May 20th, 2009 | 8:45 am

Hmm…I finally got a friend to buy me AVENT BPA-free bottles but they’ll probably go to my toddler. Wondering which brand to try for my second baby…

Looks like there are too many choices out there! I’ve got MAM’s bottles and may start from there.

Personally, I would read up as much as possible about bottles claiming to “reduce colic”. In many cases, it isn’t colic-reducing but more of lessening the amount of air a baby sucks in while sucking in the milk.

You still need to burp baby even after you use these bottles :-)

Hi Mums…just wanted to share the “BPA-free” tags appearing on most baby bottles are taking advantage of the AVENT issue concerning their polycarbonate (PC) bottles.

Due to that, other brands have tagged their bottles “BPA-free” especially if their bottles are not made of PC.

As a rule of thumb, bottles of polypropolene (PP) and PPSU are BPA-free.

The new BPA-free PC bottles are light brown in colour – see sample here – http://apregnantpause.net/2009/02/11/no-avent-bpa-free-bottles-in-malaysia/

If you ask me, I’m not THAT confident to believe that anything with a different colour is BPA-free esp as the bottle’s material is still PC.

Actually, the PP tumblers/food containers we used when we were kids were BPA-free from the start. In my case, I’m scouting out PP bottles for my new baby!

Hope this helps clear the confusion :-)

hello:

Hi all, I don’t know anything about BPA free bottles, anyway, I have been buying bottles from Japlo specialty shop and recently I got a free bottle from tommy tippy i think these brands should be reliable.
Anyway, these days tell me what what safe? Like some parents are so skeptical of cleanliness that they don’t allow their kids to eat at road side or stalls, unless they want to confine their children to home cook food otherwise they should see the food prepare in the kitchen in hotel, school, restaurant, coffee shop you name it…. are dirty okay… can’t be worried too much, like you want chemical free then grow your own vege, fruits etc etc…. sorry i don’t mean to offend anyone but this is the true fact..

Hi all,
I have changed my Avent bottle to Wee-go glass bottle. It is a wonderful bottle, been accidentally drop on the floor a few times, but still in one piece. It is so easy to wash and I only use hot water to sterilize. It is really travel friendly. It would scratch or smell. Standard size nipple, can just change to another one if you want. You can get it Mothercare.
