HELP! Potty Training

Posted by admin on Aug 23, 2008

My daughter is now 18months and I am trying to best to potty train her. She used to do her bog & small business in the pot when she was 2months old till about 8 months….we were all so happy but we slacked alittle as we were caught up with other things. From than on she has been doing it in her diaper. AIYOH!! Diaper prices went up! Each month we spend about RM200 on diapers. No matter how much I try & get her to sit on the pot she gets up & runs away.

HELP!! I am desperate. Any tips ah? Pls help me save money :(

Try potty training rewards. It worked great for our son. He loved pushing the audio button hearing he is a Big Boy and opening a door to find a chocolate surprise. He really became involved. He was peeing and pooping in his potty within a week. I know every child is different, but have a look and see if this would work for you. http://www.pottytrainingrewards.com

how is her communication? Does she know the words for pee and poop (or whatever words work for you)?

This is what worked for us:

Usually small kids pee right after waking. So, if you can get her to sit on the potty immediately after waking, there is a high chance she will pee in the potty. If she does, immediately clap and tell her “yay! you peed in the potty!”

Then encourage her to tell you when she pees and poops, even in her diaper.

Next step is to get her to tell you BEFORE she needs to pee. This is where rewards come in – I suggest a healthy favourite food (my daughter loved raisins) or maybe stickers if you daughter likes stickers. Though I confess, I did have to resort to chocolate as a reward for poop in the potty – the tiny cadbury ones were great.

Eventually, once you think she is ready and is able to communicate with you, you will have to try going diaperless…. take up the carpets!! Though you might want to try cloth diapers first to minimize mess but still let her feel the wetness.

Also, offer a reward for giving up diapers… if you can find big-girl panties with her favourite cartoon character, those are usually a good incentive.

It can be done… girls usually learn faster, and my daughter was potty-trained by 18mo – though she was in cloth diapers, which may have helped her learn (and motivated me to get her potty trained!)

Hope that helps…

I have 3 kids. I found that each and everyone of them have their own timing. we certainly can’t control our children’s bladder. Sometimes their muscles are not strong enough and even if you do potty train, you’ll find the strain of taking them to the potty every 10 minutes. This actually happened with my son. It was tiring. My eldest dd was only potty trained when she was about to turn 2 and when she was ready. Look for signs of readiness in terms of she’s not feeling very comfortable in her wet diapers or she tends to take them off. Never force them. Let nature takes it’s course. My 2nd dd was potty trained quite fast. She was eager to be potty trained and managed to stay off diapers from 18 months onwards. My son was also 18months but still wears CLoth Diapers at night. If you want to save money.. and not use Disposables… try Cloth diapers. They helped me save a lot… :) If you want to know more about which diapers to use…. feel free to email me. :) Happy training… :)

Hi Joanne,

I just stumbled what you wrote and hope you will be reading it soon.

I hope your son is not giving you sleepless nights anymore. Well, in case, I presume the milk and water temperature is all right, did you check if his stomach is blotted? if yes, means he has a lot of winds, if that is the case you could buy “Yu Yee” oil for him to apply, as for morning after he has taken his bath, give him some “gripe water”, this is very good (check dosage from the bottle).

Check your room temperature and also the clothing, some babies feel hot all the time especially baby which are big in size (like my daughter) she never had to wear mittens nor long sleeve even in air-cond room as soon as we brought her home to our house like 5 days after i have delivered her as she was a big baby. so, it really depends, only buy cotton clothing, if you see your baby sweaty means he’s feeling hot (this has to monitor) you will know after a while. of maybe he’s not comfortable with wearing diaper (especially disposable ones) as it’s really, really hot no matter whether it’s breathable it is really hot. Hope all these helps if your problem still persist.
