Pap Smears…is it really painful?
Posted by admin on Aug 2, 2008
One day there was an episode on Oprah and she had Dr Oz as her special guest. They were talking about Pap Smears and the neccessity of having it done. It was recommended that girls should have their 1st pap smear done when they are 18years of age. That was to be done as a baseline preventive care. but many of us malaysians….either shy away form it or worst have our 1st pap smears done at age 40! Some of us only had our 1st Pap test when we were pregnant. Are all these due to the many scarry stories we hear about how painful it is.
Is it really a horrible experience? Can moms share some of your experiences? This would help.
You can find out more on Pap Smear here

U know what…if u’ve given birth b4, then pap smear shud b nothing lah. Hahahah!!!
On a more serious note - NO. I don’t find my annual pap smears painful. Sure it was a tad uncomfortable, but naaah…I’ll never say its painful lah. After all, d gynae will put some lubricant on d device before inserting it into u. So tht helps a lot. Jez make sure to take a deep breath n relax during d process. Tensing up won’t help coz u’ll only be clenching ur pelvic muscle as well, thus making d insertion a bit painful.
So thts it, I guess. As in everything in our life, jez think of it positively n go for ur pap smear with an open mind. C’mon ladies, us women are ‘built tough’ what….
I agree with mommy2A. Those sexually active should do pap smear. My experience with the late Dr Jeremy at Bangsar was the most pleasant. Too bad he pass away before my second test.
But I can’t say the same with LPPKN. My God, the nurse told me to spread my legs and calm down. The next thing I heard, tuk..tuk..tuk.. What the fish?? It was a bit painful and I was wishing she could hurry up with the procedure.
Two trainee nurses nodded in unison when told that THAT was the right way to do pap smear. I could have scream “NO, IT’S NOT. You’re hurting me and you might as well take a knife and stab me!”.
But I kept quite, put on my pants, and vows to never, ever come back. Later I paid RM15 for speedy result (done by gribbles). However, it took THREE weeks for the result to come out (not very speedy eh?) and I had almost forgotten about it.
All in all, go private if you can afford it.
Err, I thought virgins are advised not to do the pap smear leh.
Agree, go for private hospital. I’ve tried the government’s family planning clinic..it’s quite painful but I can bear it as it wasn’t as painful as giving birth though.
I went to do the pap smear after delivery and it’s not painful at all. But I’m not sure was it the gynae’s skill or the after delivery effect.
I had my 1st Pap Smear about 7 months after I had my baby. And no, it wasn’t as painful as its hyped up to be. I think the 1st time my doc did a vaginal chk while i was preggers was much more painful, but purely because it was my 1st time and I didnt know that i should take a deep breath and relax during the whole thing. So when i went for my paps smear, i knew the drill, and it was a breeze. I think its the pap smear device that scares us ito thinking that it’ll be so painful, coz lets be honest — the device is darn scary looking!!!
That said, I guess it also depends on the doc who’s doing the paps smear. I did mine with my gynae, and she did a great job — gentle and soothing. Also, I got the results exactly 1 week after the test, just as the nurses promised. To those of you who are considering taking the Pap Smear test, I suggest you do your research and go to the best suited doc for you. After all, u are paying for it..
The word is not painful.
It’s UNCOMFORTABLE.
And yeah the tool looks like a weapon in a horror movie.
I think better go to private for pap smear.
My mom in law lives went to the government one and she is not the manja type at all. She said painful and they didn’t even change the sheet until she requested it cos it was dirty.
My friend went to Dr. Fan at Taman Desa Med Cent and said not really painful but uncomfortable la.
So when it comes to delivery, should we also go to private, no need to consider govern?
i done my annual paps near at LPPKN Kepong and it is ok, hurt? no. they done a great job, very gentle.
but, i didn’t received any of the result, even already go for 2nd time. but they once said to me, if there’s any problem, then they will called me. no call, maybe no prob.
i’m staying @ kota damansara..any suggestion where is the best place to do pap smear?
I did mine at DSH but dunno how much it cost la,,……means it is high time I do another one. very fast one over in 5mins.
yeah…always did mine wt my gynae @ DSH too. No prob…real quick…n they’ll jez sms u d results a week or 2 later. U don’t even hv to go to d hospital again jez to collect ur pap smear results. So canggih one lor….hahahha
no lah, its not painful to do pap smear just slightly uncomfortable, but it only takes around 5-10 minutes only lah. once sexually active must do pap smear regularly. it can detect cancer so if u do regularly it will detect early stages and u can quickly go for treatmet. dont wait until its too late.
Nope, pap smears are not painful. Dr Jason of Sunway Medical is pretty good. Or Dr SP Ng of Columbia Asia Puchong..
Jay.Elle,
How much you pay at Columbia Asia Puchong for doing pap smears.
do they do pap smear first before they give the cervical cancer vaccine?
Do not marry with foolishness. There may be children.
