Hello mothers,

I am a mother of a two year old girl but also an English tutor. As a public service, I have started a creative writing blog (completely free of charge) to help children with their English writing. It’s full of writing tips and interesting exercises to fire up their imagination and help them express themselves creatively. Do check it out:

sorry, you didn’t let us know where you live. i live in SJ, well i would say chinese medium school are few, it’s kind of blessings if you have like 1 chinese school from where you stay. in SJ, there are 2 chinese schools i.e. lick hung in SS and chee wen (near to Giant, USJ 1), lick hung is already famous made by their ex-head mistress whom has retired now, i heard the new head master is less strict but still good, it’s difficult to please parents these days, some complain too much homework for their kids and some complain too little homework. i tried to enrol my daughter to lick hung even when she was like 2years old, we even filled in necessary forms + letters etc, when i received the letter from lick hung to go to the school i thought my application was successful, however, it was not, i just didn’t understand all parents whom applications were rejected were still asked to go to the school with the same letter, anyway, my daughter was sent to chee wen and i would say that most of the pupils in chee wen are those rejected pupils from lick hung. my 7 year old daughter’s class is upstairs, it’s pitiful for a 7 year old to drag their heavy school bag each day, imagine, she just started jan ‘09 and i realised her bag is already torn back in feb ‘09. i had to buy her another bag, i just can’t imagine. coming to the teachers, i think there are just too many classes and students, she has so many exercise books, some just used 1 page, i think the teachers in chee wen is not so dedicated, thank God my daughter’s malay teacher is quite nice, she still answers my phone if i need to ask quick question. i tried calling many times to chee wen’s school phone but no one answer, imagine. i would strongly recommend you to send your daughter to lick hung if you stay somewhere near to SJ, but be prepared as it’s not easy to go into this school.

KUEN CHENG is good. It has good discipline and teachers are experieinced. They have good curricular activities.
But seriously if you can afford. Private school’s education is the best. You can hire a good tuition for any extra languae that you require. :-)

My daughter is now 4yrs old. we have to register her into a school next year. We are staying in kota damansara. Does anyone has any other comment on SJK(C) DAMANSASA (opposite riana green?) Most important is the teachers and their attitude.

About puay chai 2, the one near 1 utama, does anyone know if my daughter can get into this school since we are living in kota damansara ?

I also heard a Chinese school in subang 2, anyone has any idea about it?

thanks

May 15th, 2009 | 12:52 pm

hi sue,
One of my cousin’s went to the chinese school near 1U and another 2 of my cousins went to the chinese school opposites riana green. i would say both are good schools. bear in mind chinese school is usually more stressful. i am not sure about damansara as i live in sj, i registered my daughter when she was 3years old to lick hung chinese school and i did register her again when it was time for registration (imagine twice and i thought with that and recommendation letter + the fact we live in sj will guarantee her a place) but to my disappointment, the answer was “NO” and we only got to know when we received a letter to request us to visit the school like few weeks before school starts, imagine i had to queue up like all other parents and then when it was my turn, they can’t find my daughter’s name and after much search they realised that my daughter’s application was rejected and was sent to chee wen, though they told me at that time that i could appeal but then i asked them what is the chances of getting entry to lick hung they said “VERY SLIM”, i was so mad that i wanted to scold those teachers, well i was not the only one (frustrated) as there were lots of parents like me. so to you, both chinese schools in damansara are famous schools and also imagine the density + these days other races also going to chinese schools, suggest you call up both schools or it would always be better if you could go there to check with the teachers personally. Good luck!

You know they send her to another school which is at least 20 KM away from my home ! I just wonder how do they do the selection for this? Why are they making parents so difficult ! Can somebody tell me how I can appeal to transfer back to Choong Wen? Who can I seek help in the Ministry of Education in Jalan Duta?

Hi Ekah,

I am sorry to hear about your daughter’s rejected registration, I fully understand your frustration, it happened to me before.

That’s really ridiculous.

I am making assumption that your child is still in kindergarten and is only starting next year which means you still have some time. Suggest you call the school (that rejected your application) and speak to the headmaster and ask him/her on this, what is the reason for the rejection since you stay nearby to the school, if he/she is telling you that this is beyond their control i.e. Ministry of Education. Then I suggest you write in to Star Paper and at the same time try calling Ministry of Education, but sorry to say I honestly scared to deal with any government department, they are all sleeping I am sure you know what I mean. Most times no one picking up the phone, else they would transfer your call here and there, the person that you speak to won’t come back to you sigh well I guess no choice really, have to try…. Anyway, good luck!

I would like to share with all parents out there about my frustration with Chee Wen Primary School in Subang Jaya.

My daughter who is in Primary 1 is studying there.

There were a few incidences that made me feeling very unhappy about this school. My daughter told me that her form teacher would pulled her hair and pushed her head if she doesn’t know her work.

Maybe I am being kiasu, I always give my daughter advance school homework (as I find their teacher is a little bit slow and also I was thinking to fill-up my daughter’s time in the evening) but I didn’t know that I shouldn’t do it. One evening my daughter came home and was crying, she told me that she doesn’t want to go to this school anymore and asked me to transfer her to another school because of her form teacher’s treatment. Her form teacher asked her who taught her the homework and my daughter told her “My mummy” and you know what the form teacher told my daughter (while pulling her hair and pushed her head)? She said to my daughter, since your mother is so smart, why not asked her come to this school and teach! I was furious, 1st of all I am not against the teacher to punish my daughter if she didn’t behave or didn’t do her homework i.e. beat her hand with ruler but not telling a child that which I find absolutely inappropriate and how can a teacher pull hair and push head? I feel this teacher could have use a different way i.e. write the reason into my daughter’s message book which I read it every day and this is the way we communicate with teacher as to why I should not be teaching my daughter advance homework and not telling her that way, I think that stupid teacher failed to understand that what bad effect she has done to my daughter (children has dignity too!). I decided to go to her school personally and met with their Assistant Headmistress since her Headmaster is busy bee and explained to her how I felt about the whole thing. Well, too lengthy to go but I think this matter is settled as these days I don’t hear my daughter coming home telling me her teacher pull her hair or pushed her head. But, I still monitor from time to time. Anyway, her form teacher is weirdo….

Recently, during one of their physical exercise lesson, my daughter’s uniforms (both the white & dark blue) was mistakenly taken by another students from another class! Oh, yes I don’t know why for that day they had to remove their socks as well so her socks was gone too! (Okay, socks were never returned well if someone returned back I won’t let me daughter to wear it for hygiene purpose…..) Imagine, I had such a hard time texting her Malay teacher (who teaches them physical exercise class) about this as my daughter only has 2 sets of school uniforms so it rotates at that time when we lost 1 set, we had to washed it every morning and had to ironed it dry for her….. anyway, finally like 1 week+ someone returned back her blue uniform since their name is printed on the uniform (imagine, her name is printed but the parents didn’t know, or the child that accidentally wore my daughter’s uniform didn’t know sigh) but the white one was never found till today!!! Imagine? This is not the end.

Last Friday, my daughter came home telling us that her school shoes were accidentally worn by another student from her class after their computer class (they are required to remove shoes). Imagine, we never wrote names on her shoes! And the shoes that she had to wear (belongs to another student) is smaller and extremely dirty! Not all, we had to go out on weekends to buy her another pair and for your information, my daughter’s shoes that were accidentally worn by the other student is actually very new like 3 weeks only. I kept texting to her Malay teacher to help me find the shoes as my daughter told me it should be someone from her class – I know I am troubling this teacher again though it’s not her fault but she’s the only teacher that gave me her mobile no (and just to share with you all) my daughter’s form teacher is hopeless, she doesn’t help at all. Luckily my daughter managed to find out who wore her shoes and asked the girl to return it back to her and you know children, the girl answered my daughter that she’s not going to return the shoes back to my daughter, anyway, finally I saw the shoes inside my daughter’s school bag yesterday. And the shoes belonging to this girl was also returned to her yesterday.

You know now we write my daughter’s name on every piece of her uniforms, socks, shoes etc etc…. Too scary….

And these days my daughter told me that she has to sit on foldable chair as there are more students transferred from other classes to her class. Sorry, I do pity those little kids (including my daughter) as they have so many books (yes follow according to the time-table) and yet so many books to bring to school (yes, though it’s trolley back) but they are not able to pull it still they have to lift it up as they walk up the stairs and their classes are not downstairs but it’s 1 floor/2 floors up….

I pray no more problems cropping up again… Yesterday the lady who fetches to & fro my daughter to school told me briefly that nowadays she has such a bad headache everyday sending and picking them up as the school has again changed the system….

To all parents out there who wants to send your children to Chinese school and who live in SJ or nearby SJ, suggest you try Lick Hung first…..

hello:

Hi Amil,
Kids could take pressure, I won’t say all chinese schools are good and produce good students as apart from the school’s effort, a lot is on the child itself. My daughter is attending a chinese school in Subang Jaya and I am already disappointed with the teachers, each time I opened my daughter’s exercise book, I found there are many unfinished home work that she didn’t manage to copy but teacher don’t seem to check. And I have to apply leave to go to the school to check on this :( It’s really sad…

My daughter is enrolled into Kuen Cheng 2 for Year 1 next year which is 20km from my house. Choong Wen is nearer and I heard it is one of the top school now. Anyone can enlighten me as I am undecided whether to transfer my daughter to Choong Wen. I was told the classes at Choong Wen is congested with 53 students per class.

November 9th, 2009 | 12:16 pm
Monica:

@fong,you are right, Choong wen is a very good school and I have feedback from many students who have left…they all have very happy memories of this school. I have been there…the teachers are very kind and respectful to the students – I saw with my own eyes. I don’t know about the “emotional” side of Kuen Cheng but study wise, I hear they are a quality school with experienced teachers and high stds. I’ve seen their exercise books too. Okay if you ask me.

November 17th, 2009 | 1:26 am
Monica:

@fong, forgot to add, yes, choong wen would be around 50 students per class. If your child is the type that can concentrate, then should be no problem. Kuen Cheng is a very good school too so think carefully if you want to transfer.

I have enrolled both my kids at the school, and there is no such procedures of interviewing. Just go to admin office to fill up the necessary doc and submit utility bill.

You must enroll within the time frame set by government and school. I just went last month for my 5 yrs old kid.

I guess if you go after the deadline or kid transfer from other school maybe you have to go through certain other procedures

Monica:

Your enrolment form has choice Nos.1,2,3. If you didn’t get your first choice, surely the edu.dept has allocated the 2nd or 3rd choice for your child. So I’m wondering why you are going round searching for a school.
The edu.dept would not reject all your 3 choices, leavng your child “unregistered” for Std 1. They most definately would have approved your 2nd or 3rd choice. So I’m curious, where did they placed your child?

May 12th, 2010 | 11:22 pm
Monica:

FYI, I don’t think you need any help to enter Yuk Chyun. I suggest you look see the school before enrolling your child there. Personally, I’d suggest If your daughter is intelligent and already very well versed in mandarin, you’d probably want to scout other schools that provide better opportunities for maximum growth. If she is very average to weak, then yes, by all means do.

May 12th, 2010 | 11:35 pm
Monica:

Sorry, I just remembered you only get your application results between Aug-Oct. An the school cannot reject you. Do you mean they refuse to give you an application form? Or are you saying you actually never registered your child in the stipulated time frame?

May 31st, 2010 | 2:28 pm
KL Mom:

Hi Nemo, Khai Chee may be the best in Jln Ipoh but after what have happened to my girl in this half a year, I would try to avoid history again.
My girl and her classmates are having the “fear” syndrome lately. She and all her classmates were caned because of one person’s mistake such as making noisy, shouting or talking in class. They got caned for forgetting to bring a book or lost a book (but a few times I discovered it was misplaced by the class monitor or teacher, and actually none at their fault). One male teacher caned my girl’s hand and she got a cut, she was so afraid to tell me until i confronted her. She and some friends were also afraid to let us parents make the complain or they will get caned and blamed.I was very shocked of some of the teacher’s attitude.
I don’t think all chinese schools adopt this kind of strict approach. Which is why I decided to find out more about Lai Chee primary school, I don’t mind if the school is smaller or have lesser students as long the learning environment is safe and non-threatening.
Kepong 3 is closed for intakes, Kepong 2 is too far for us.
I am looking forward for someone to comment about the Lai Chee primary school. In fact it was my girl who asked for a change in school when she goes to Primary 2 next year. So, I guess it is time to do research.

Observer:

I dont think it is wise to change school just because a teacher is strict.

I also faced such a situation when my kid was at standard one, refused to attend tuition class, the tuition teacher was said to be fierce and strict.

As parents, we like teacher to be a little strict to my kids to instil some dicipline.

So I sent my kid to the tuition class and at the same time speak to the teacher about my son concerned.

I guessed the teacher mellow down in her teachg approached and my son never complained since then.

In chinese schools, there is always some pressure for teachers to performed and achieved certain standards.

I think it is best to speak to the teacher personally, instead of transfering kid from one to another school, more so your kid is just only in standard 1.

Does anyone know if Chung Hwa school, off Jalan Ampang has a kindergarten? My daughter is currently in an English kindie and I’m worried she might get a culture shock if she goes straight to a Chinese school without going to a Chinese kindie first.

Hi mothers,

I am considering my daughters schooling options (private vs kebgsaan vs sjkc vs international)… anyone on the same boat? she’s in english kindie, but alos learns chinese and bm. I heard lai meng is a good school, with a good racial mix and not the typical chinese school (read: stressful) approach. Can anyone share their experience? I’d love her to get exposed to the chinese stream but none of us know Chinese at all, and am worried, it might be too stressful for her to manage. Please help ;)

Dear Kiat Hong,

I sent my daughter to Tadika Suria Aman in Subang Bestari, Seksyen U5. Montessori concept and the school conduct chinese classes (hong ching ting syllabus) as well. I am pleased with my daughter’s ability to speak and write in chinese. I will be sending her to SJKC Subang in 2012. Principal is June Lee 012-2879823.

Dear CT,

If you are non-chinese, the school principal will talk to the parents of to make sure that they understand the kind of schooling environment that the child is going to face and what the parents need to prepare in order to support the child learning curve as the family members are non-chinese speaking. Hope you can understand the the principal of SJKC Subang Mr. Chew is not making it difficult for your child to enrol into the school. Coming from a non-chinese speaking background, your child need to put in twice the effort. It is recommended that you send your son to a kindergarten that runs chinese class. Perhaps you may want to check out Tadika Suria Aman in Subang Bestari. Please read my comments to Kiat Hong stated above.

Cheers.

Didie:

Can anyone help me? I just moved to subang bestari and my son currently attend sjk puay chai 2 in BU. basically, when we stay in damansara damai, there is a transporter who’s willing enough to fetch/send him to school.

1 week after shifting, the transporter gave me 24hour quit notice (sigh**) and now i & my hubby (we’re car-pooling) fetch my son from school. after giving some thought, i and my husband think that we should switch to another chinese school which is nearer to subang bestari.

so the question now is – is there any good chinese school in subang bestari area? pity my hubby since he had to travel here and there in order to send and fetch my son from school.

fyi, im working in putrajaya and my husband is doing project thing (so..he’s kinda mobile)… i really hope someone out there can give me some light in this…(**sigh**)

August 3rd, 2010 | 10:14 am
SA:

hi didie,

there is no chinese school at subang bestari.

the nearest is SRJC Subang at kampung baru subang town about 7 km from your place and you can surely find buses going there. The school is ok.

Nowaday, school buses dont go far due to high gas prices and they go to few nearby residential areas.

By the way, how you take the long distance travellg from bistari to putrajaya daily?

August 3rd, 2010 | 10:27 am
Didie:

tq very much SA.

I have called the school admin and yes, they are very helpful. Therefore, my very first impression is already GOOD.

As for the buses, i think it would be easier to find then compare to the idea of sending my son to puay chai 2.**:)

Actually i kinda like tired due to the long distance travelling. But, it has been like 4 years now and kinda immune to it already. I want to shift to somewhere in shah alam or subang due the distance (petrol n toll as well) but my husband restrict me from doing so…he said something about career-wise. so here i am…commute daily from shah alam to pj.

btw, this is my 5cent worth opinion only – im glad that im staying out of putrajaya. i need to see other place after working hours coz i dont think seeing my neighbour working in the same office would do any good to me. just imagine…going to alamanda, and there you go – you bumped to your neighbour aka your workmate. imagine of having this kinda situation for like 24/7. for some people, maybe they are OK with it but as for me, i would say i want to have more friends from other place as well.

Dear CYF,

basically what Linda have mentioned here is so correct. Me and my collegue had invited them (the SCORE A people) for a talk about the score A system. BUT it seems that 90% of the session was actually focusing on their ladder scheme and how it helps to generate some income. and yes, it is about the MLM where you pay some rm80 then you can use the score A programme. at the same time, u can expand the programme by introducing more people about the product and vice versa.

i prefer sending my kid to tuition – the traditional method still works ;) . at least you can have your peace at home. no need to look for other people to be your downline and stuff…

….OMG!! This is exactly what the 1st recruiter I met said (2years ago) and another I met in church (hmm, they’re even doing it in church) this year said!!

I am not putting down the prog since I alway said no to a demo before they even started the sales talk but I find Score A recruits so hypocrite, pretending to care about a child’s welfare. In the first place, given the time a kid spends on the computer at his/her leisure time is enough to spoil their eyes, and you say pc tuition is good? Maybe good to pass exams but what about the eye strain and can a pc really replace the indirect teaching of care, social skills, communication, body language recognition skill, danger signs etc etc by a human tutor? because this is what a child learns in his/her growing years when in contact with another human being, whether good or bad.

August 12th, 2010 | 1:24 am
linda:

You know llk, if your child is smart – no need so smart, just able to read and write enough – you don’t have to waste your $ on private schools. Primary text is so so easylah, even you can sit and teach your child. Maybe if she/she does secondary and in science stream, then you might consider private since at this level, there are different levels of effective teachers in physics, chemistry, add maths etc. But in primary, teachers don’ teach the whole year also, your kid can learn by you just spend 90mins daily reading/writing with him/her. Of course if you wanna teach your child the realisation of private school equals one class above citizen , then by all means do. This teaching comes in auto mode (no need tuition) and by Form One, they are also auto mode to use only branded stuff. Sadly, many parents luvvv this auto modes that mould their kids. Sigh

August 12th, 2010 | 8:14 pm
linda:

Hi sos mom, actually I’m noot negative about Score A since I don’t know much (except young eyes can be strained using pc)…it’s the people who try to sell and their approcah. First they approach like so concern about your child ,then bang! So damn hypocrite, I can’t stand. The last one a 18 year old don’t even have bf yet and still living under mummy n daddy said Score A GOOOOOOD (she really spoke like that)…feel like slapping her(because I can see right thru her that she actually don’t know if really effective or not, as long sell). And that 2 years ago one…she called 101 times, I say my little one (only 1 year old) sleeping, can’t you believe, she ask me nvm, just put in the car and come see demo in subang. So heartless!

As for the new school, the teachers and staffs were very helpful to us. The teacher informed us on every school update by writing notes to us daily. That never happened before…so, im really grateful about it.

Hi,

I live in Kota Damansara and I would like to know when are we allow to apply and register for primary school and what are the procedures? My daughter is 5 and I want to send her to a kebangsaan national school. I am part chinese mix. I see most schools in Kota Damansara area are almost 100% malay students and I would prefer a mix instead of pro a certain race. My questions again are:
1) When can I register? At what age?
2) Do I have to register to schools near my house only or can I register like for schools in Bandar Utama, Mutiara Damansara, Damansara Utama or Taman Tun area which are not that near but surrounding areas? Also can I use my relative’s address?

Thanks.

Hi, need your advice on some questions preparing for my son’s schooling..

1. what is the age to start enrolling into Puay Chai and Yuk Chai primary school?

2. Early registration can guarantee a place in the desired school?

3. Is there any qualification requirement for Puay Chai and Yuk Chai? It’s bit over to ask for ‘qualification’ from a 5 or 6 year old though…

Thanks for your time ! :)

September 3rd, 2010 | 11:53 pm
Didie:

Dear Katie,

I was staying at Damansara Damai when i registered my son at SJK Puay Chai 2, BU. By looking at that practically, you can register ur kid at BU/ Mutiara Damansara, TTDI or Damansara Area although u stayed at Kota Damansara. But it depends to the approval of Education District Dept. If they are ok with ur applicatiion, then its OK lor. But, be ready for any circumstances, just in case.

The school that you prefer will open up their registration for some period. Usually they will do it in the first/ second quarter of the year. Please be aware on any banners placed outside the school compound. Some school open up the registration for two years in advance. This is due to the limited seats/ overwhelming response from hopeful parents.

Standards documents to be brought during registration: Birth certs, Mykid (if any), passport pics, Marriage certs, Utility bills (anything that bear your house address). If you are renting, then you will need a letter from your landlord to verify this.

Hopefully, this info can help you out. But, anything above the rest given, be free to call the school office. They will help you out. :)

September 7th, 2010 | 11:47 am
Didie:

Dear Joyce,

1) usually the registration for standard 1 is open for kids that is 4-5 years old. it depends to the school.

2) early registration will secure your chances but it will not guarantee a confirmed place. still have to go thru Education District Dept for approval.

3)hmmm… about the qualifications… well, i never encountered anything about it before becoz the kids will get some sort like ‘training’ for a month or two before the new term of school starts. usually its open for those who’s interested. sort like a tuition class

Dear YW,

My eldest girl is attending Bao Bei reading classes since April this year and she loves to attending their classes everyday. It has somehow given her the confidence to speak and recognise chinese characters. She’s six now and will be attending primary 1 next year in a Chinese Media school. Thus, Bao Bei has provided her the foundation, so am relief that she’ll have no problems adapting to the new environment next year. They are offering 1 month of free trial and you may want to check it out. Believe me, it’s worth it.

Dear YW,

My girl attends Pre-school as well and Bao Bei is like an enhancement course for parents who wish to send their kids to Chinese Primary School. We do not speak Mandarin at home and thus Bao Bei is a revenue for her to learn Mandarin at ease and without preasure. Cheers.
